Sustainable textile "Ay no NUNO"

This collaborative project between Ay and Epson archives the designs of Isesaki Meisen, a silk fabric that is no longer in production, and revives them through the power of digital technology. The playful colors, designs, and delicate kasuri (a characteristic of pre-dyed plain weave fabrics) of Isesaki Meisen have been faithfully reproduced on silk. Using the high-precision inkjet technology of Epson's sustainable textile printing machine, Monna Lisa, even the subtle gradations and swaying of the threads have been beautifully recreated.

This digital textile printing system revolutionizes the traditional analog dyeing process. It eliminates the need for printing plates, minimizes ink loss, and reduces water usage by up to 97% . By eliminating the large amounts of water and chemicals required for traditional dyeing and producing only what is needed, when it is needed, on-demand, it significantly reduces the environmental impact. It also creates a safe working environment where there is no direct contact with ink, making craftsmen-friendly manufacturing possible.

Isesaki Meisen: Over 100 years old

Meisen, a type of kimono, spread throughout Japan from the Taisho to Showa periods and became a popular choice for women as both everyday wear and fashionable attire. Northern Kanto was a major production area, with Kiryu, Ashikaga, Chichibu, Hachioji, and Isesaki being representative examples. Gunma Prefecture's Isesaki meisen was the largest producer. Developed against the backdrop of a sericulture culture dating back to the Nara period, it was beloved by so many people that it's said one in ten Japanese women wore it from the Meiji to Showa periods. Isesaki meisen is characterized by its unique patterns and vibrant colors, achieved through a sophisticated technique called "heiyo-gasuri." This technique involves dyeing the patterns on both the warp and weft threads, and then manually combining each thread during weaving to create sharp, beautiful patterns. However, it is no longer produced today and is no longer in production.

The Isesaki Meisen pattern has been incorporated into the cushion.
