Wearing 100 Years of History. "Isesaki Meisen" Revived with Modern Technology: 10 Japanese-Made Silk Scarves

We have archived the designs of "Isesaki Meisen," a silk fabric from Gunma Prefecture born approximately 100 years ago, and reimagined them as scarves to naturally blend into your daily life.

With fabrics like Isesaki Meisen, the width of the kimono bolt is only about 36cm. To create clothing within this limited width, we always had to face constraints such as design pattern challenges and fabric shortages.

However, by utilizing archived design data, we have transcended these physical limitations, allowing them to be reborn as large-format scarves.

Scarves take on different expressions when laid out versus when worn. That is why we redesigned the pattern layout so that a beautiful composition emerges the moment it is tied around the neck.

After repeated prototyping and verification, we adjusted the width of the borders, the intensity of the colors, and the scale of the patterns to the millimeter.
This is a piece that is complete the moment you wear it.

Light and supple. Silk jacquard weave for everyday effortless use.

For the fabric, we use 100% silk jacquard woven by "Ogura Textile," a company in Ishikawa Prefecture with a 130-year history. They are a precious weaver specializing in wide-width silk jacquard, one of the few remaining in Japan.

In this project, we offer 10 total patterns that capture the playfulness representative of Isesaki Meisen from that era.

We have curated a selection so that you can choose the one that makes you think, "I want to wear this today," depending on your mood or outfit.

Paris Collection

Designs ① through ④ are based on the collection we recently presented at Paris Fashion Week, translated into scarves.

① Red

A scarf that exudes presence with vivid red accented by yellow and black. While featuring geometric patterns typical of Isesaki Meisen, the design—which somehow also resembles flowers—adds a sense of softness to its inherent strength.

② Iroha

A palette overflowing with transparency, featuring pastel colors as a base with red and green leaves swaying as accents.
The soft hues add light around the face, lending the skin a clear, radiant impression.

③ Pink

A feminine design with understated sweetness, featuring pink flowers blooming on a pale background. It brings a natural brightness to the face and creates a gentle impression.

④ Bird

An impressive composition drawn with vivid colors and bird motifs. It holds a presence as if you were wearing a painting, instantly making it the centerpiece of your outfit.

Archive Collection

In implementing this project, we created two new designs from Ay's archives to reach a wider range of sensibilities.

⑤ Navy

A design where the white of mizubasho (Asian skunk cabbage) flowers floats against a deep navy background.
The beauty of the contrast stands out, providing a sophisticated, modern impression.

⑥ Violet

A vibrant, powerful piece where purple and pink overlap brilliantly.
By layering two different patterns, we achieved a composition with profound depth.

Samoan Collection

Patterns ⑦ through ⑩ are four special designs born from a collaboration with "Samoan Sugai," a hugely popular influencer living in Gunma Prefecture with over 340,000 total followers.
This project came to life after we hit it off, sharing the mutual desire to "bring the joy and charm of Meisen to more people."

Samoan Sugai (Keisuke Sugai)

Born in Tokyo in 1989. After graduating from Waseda University, he worked at Kokubu Group Corp., the Embassy of the Independent State of Samoa, Yahoo Japan Corporation, and CyberAgent, Inc. While working at the embassy, he was also active as a comedian. Currently working as a freelancer, he shares content on social media and develops projects in collaboration with local businesses. His "Girls' Common Experiences" videos based on true stories are highly popular.

⑦ Samoan Blue

An initially pop and unique design with striking, bold vase motifs.
However, when worn, the color balance settles down, transforming into a calm, elegant atmosphere.

⑧ Embassy

A classical modern design with striking, geometrically linked motifs.
It possesses an intellectual and neat appearance that evokes a touch of European formality.

⑨ Feather

A dynamic composition where red, blue, and yellow colors overlap on Isesaki Meisen's characteristic feather motif.
As a counterpart to the classical ⑧ Embassy, this piece adds depth to an outfit through movement and color.

⑩ Pistachio

A piece that reconstructs geometric motifs—frequently seen in Isesaki Meisen and reminiscent of ancient civilizations—with modern color schemes. While the composition is linear and powerful, the muted pink and olive tones bring a sense of softness.

Printed using Epson's inkjet technology

Archiving the designs of silk fabrics that are no longer in production, and reviving them for the modern day through digital technology—this is a joint project between Ay and EPSON.

We have faithfully reproduced the playful colors, designs, and the delicate expressions of "kasuri" (ikat) inherent to Isesaki Meisen onto silk material.
Thanks to high-precision inkjet technology, even the subtle gradations and the wavering of lines are beautifully expressed.

This realizes a manufacturing process that is kind to both the environment and the craftspeople.

Careful sewing in Japan

In factories within Japan, we employ highly delicate sewing known as a 2mm-width hand-rolled hem.
The thin, beautifully finished edges give the entire scarf a sophisticated impression.
