What is gold thread?

Gold thread is made by cutting Japanese paper with gold leaf pressed onto it using lacquer as glue.
The brightness of the gold leaf is subtly adjusted by the thinness of the lacquer,
and the gold leaf, said to be 1/10,000 mm thin, is pressed without gaps, a process filled with craftsmanship. Also, the materials themselves—lacquer, gold leaf, and Japanese paper—are made using techniques passed down by Japanese artisans for generations.
Originally, it was used in Nishijin weaving, Kyoto's finest textile tradition dating back 1600 years, but due to the shrinking demand for kimonos and the development of simpler production methods, there are now only a few artisans in the region who inherit the traditional manufacturing techniques.

What is Meisen?

Meisen is a kimono that spread throughout Japan from the late Meiji to Showa periods and was loved as everyday and fashionable wear by ordinary women. The main production areas of Meisen are in northern Kanto: Kiryu, Ashikaga, Chichibu, Hachioji, and Isesaki. Among them, "Isesaki Meisen" from Gunma Prefecture, where sericulture is said to have started in the Nara period, had a large production volume and was said to be worn by one in ten women nationwide at the time.
The charm of Isesaki Meisen lies in its unique patterns and vivid colors created by "heiyou kasuri" (combined ikat). Heiyou kasuri is a technique where not only the warp threads but also the weft threads are dyed (resist-dyed), and woven one by one on a handloom by combining warp and weft threads. However, the Meisen industry, once thriving, is now declining due to the shrinking kimono culture and lack of successors.
